In olden days a King or someone of importance would have a signet ring that would be pressed into wax that was placed on important documents. The symbol from the ring would stand for the individual’s authority or power. Today we have symbols like Logos or Icons that stand out in our minds and linger with us for a long time.

Think of the McDonald’s logo for example. It has virtually stayed the same and now is recognized worldwide. Now think to yourself the complexity of the McDonald’s logo? It’s not complex at all! It’s a simple double arch.

There are a lot of people that consider themselves logo designers, but what you’ll find is that the logo looks more like photo than an icon. Well-designed logos are clear and convey something about the entity that they represent. This could be expressed by use of clean lines, small amounts of colors, shapes that represent the company, or simply well designed type.

Good logos also don’t change much if at all. The longer you use a logo the more people associate with it. When you are designing your logo, letterhead, or any other identity item, think to yourself… is this something I want my company represented for the next 25 years? If not… then you don’t have a good logo.
